All kitchen countertops are different and all require different care. Knowing how to clean your particular kitchen countertop can make it last longer and diminish wear-and-tear. Here are instructions on how to clean some of the most popular kitchen countertops.

Granite

Granite countertops should be cleaned daily. For common spills, warm water with a soft cloth will work. At the end of the day, use a good granite spray cleaner to disinfect and protect your countertops. These cleaners should also give your granite a streak-free shine.

Quartz

Cleaning a quartz countertop is similar to granite but it can handle a lot of more. The best way to clean quartz is to wipe up spills with a warm, wet, soft cloth. You can use a quartz spray cleaner to get tougher spots out. A lot of cleaners work for marble, granite, and quartz. If warm water and the quartz cleaner aren’t doing the trick, degreasing products and oil-based cleaners can also be used.

Laminate

The best way to keep laminate clean is to wipe up spills immediately, even if those spills are just water. Water is able to get in the cracks of laminate and cause it to swell, making it very important to clean efficiently. When cleaning, use a soft cloth with water a mild commercial cleaner on the surface. Make sure the cloth is damp, not dripping wet. Don’t use acidic cleaners like bleach because it can permanently discolor the laminate. To clean greasy buildup, use a 50/50 vinegar and water solution.

Butcher Block

Butcher block can be difficult to maintain. Spills should be cleaned up immediately to prevent stains. When food gets stuck to the counter, use a metal or plastic spatula to gently scrape the food off the surface. Avoid gouging the wood by just skimming the surface. Then take a scrub brush or sponge and scrub the butcher block with hot water and mild soap. To sanitize the surface, use undiluted white vinegar. Spray the white vinegar and let it sit on the countertop for a few minutes, then wipe it off with a clean, damp dishcloth. Be sure to dry the countertop as thoroughly as possible. To remove most of the moisture, run a scraper over the top of the countertop, then towel dry.

Marble

Marble is prone to stains from anything acidic – milk, wine, lemon juice, or tomato juice. Acid eats away a tiny bit of the surface creating dull spots known as etches. Other than it’s fragileness to acidity, marble is pretty easy to clean. Use warm water and a non-abrasive soap – nothing with acid or lemon juice. Put the warm water and soap in a spray bottle and spray the countertop lightly with the mixture. Wipe the soapy water off the counter with a hot, wet dishcloth. Dry the marble with an absorbent towel.

Concrete

Warm water and a mild soap will go a long way for removing stains on concrete. If you have hard water, use a scum or hard water deposit remover as hard water will build up on the surface. A pH neutral cleaner works best to really get them clean. Don’t use abrasive cleansers or scrubbing pads because it can scratch the surface easily.
